Some people worry about being affected by a vitamin deficiency. In this article, we look at what exactly is meant by this term, what the consequences of a vitamin deficiency can be and what you can ultimately do to avoid getting into this situation in the first place.
What is a vitamin deficiency anyway?
Vitamins are essential nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy and function within normal parameters. However, most vitamins cannot be produced by the human body itself and must be supplied through the diet.
A vitamin deficiency is therefore present when the body does not receive enough vitamins to fully maintain all bodily functions.
Vitamin deficiency or undersupply?
In contrast to a vitamin deficiency, where too few vitamins are available for normal bodily functions, a vitamin deficiency occurs when the reference values for sufficient nutrient intake are not reached.
The reference values indicate the amount of nutrients that can theoretically supply almost all healthy people in a population. The requirement is the amount that the body needs to function normally.
In other words: If the reference values are not reached, it is highly likely that the vitamin requirements cannot be met. In this case, there is an undersupply, which can lead to a vitamin deficiency over time.

A vitamin C deficiency manifests itself in tiredness, weakness and muscle pain as well as joint pain, bleeding gums and poor wound healing.
A persistent vitamin D deficiency leads to bone weakness, muscle weakness, increased susceptibility to infections and mood problems.
A lack of vitamin E can lead to nerve damage, muscle weakness, problems with the immune system or even with reproduction.
Bleeding and bone problems as well as an increased risk of osteoporosis is the case with a vitamin K deficiency.

If the body is deficient in certain vitamins, dry eyes can also be the result.
- Vitamin A is extremely important for the health of the retina and the surface of the eye, as a deficiency can lead to dry eyes and impaired vision.
- Vitamin C is also beneficial for the health of the blood vessels in the eyes. It also reduces inflammation and damage to the surface of the eye.
- Vitamin E supports the cell health of the eyes. It can help to prevent the oxidation of fats in the cell membranes.
- Omega-3 fatty acids are important for the tear fluid and can reduce inflammation and damage to the surface of the eye.
Dry skin due to vitamin deficiency?
Our largest organ – the skin – can also be negatively affected by a vitamin deficiency, causing it to dry out and flake.
- Vitamin A is involved in the formation and renewal of skin cells and helps to keep the skin moisturized.
- Vitamin C is closely linked to the production of collagen – a protein that gives the skin structure and elasticity.
- Vitamin E is also important for protecting the skin from damage caused by free radicals. It can help to retain moisture in the skin.
- Vitamin D helps to regulate skin functions – it therefore supports healthy, moisturized skin.
Of course, in addition to nourishing the skin from the inside, external skin care also plays an important role.

Do the soles of your feet hurt due to vitamin deficiency?
If the soles of your feet hurt, this may be a sign of neuropathy. Such nerve damage can be caused by a vitamin deficiency, with vitamin B12 being particularly important. Those affected feel pain, tingling or numbness in their feet.

- Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) supports the formation of red blood cells and the function of the nervous system. A vitamin B12 deficiency often leads to anemia, dizziness and weakness.
- Vitamin C strengthens the health of the blood vessels – it reduces inflammation and damage to the blood vessel walls. A lack of vitamin C can cause weak and brittle blood vessels.
- Vitamin D is important for regulating calcium and phosphate metabolism in the body and helps to regulate blood pressure. A vitamin D deficiency can lead to an increased risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.
Vitamin deficiency or another cause?
The causality in relation to a lack of vitamins and the corresponding symptoms is already sufficiently documented. Conversely, however, these symptoms do not always indicate a vitamin deficiency – as other causes are of course also possible.

How long does it take to correct a vitamin deficiency? And how can it be prevented?
As we have seen, a vitamin deficiency can cause serious health problems and should therefore be treated as soon as possible. The duration of treatment depends on various factors: How severe is the deficiency, which vitamin is missing or how effective is the treatment applied.
It often takes several weeks to several months before a vitamin deficiency is corrected.
A balanced diet – rich in vitamins and minerals – is the best way to effectively prevent a vitamin deficiency. Therefore, make sure you eat a varied diet.
Vitamin products in the form of capsules or vitamin drinks, for example, can be taken as a supplement to ensure an adequate supply. However, an overdose of vitamin supplements can also have negative effects on health.
For this reason, vitamins and vital substances should ideally be obtained from natural foods.
