We have a few tips for you on ideal skin care after 40 that can help you achieve a fresh and youthful appearance.
In the following article, we therefore want to take a look at which factors have a negative impact on the skin in detail and which measures are beneficial for a healthy complexion. We will also look at optimal skin care and general health requirements that have a positive effect on the skin.
Skin care after 40 – what should I look out for?
From the age of 40, the signs of time gradually become noticeable, especially on the face, where they can sometimes manifest themselves in the form of expression lines.
If you don’t want to accept this fate, you should pay more attention to intensive skin care and take effective countermeasures with suitable dermaceutical products and a healthy lifestyle.
Thanks to the knowledge gained over many years, innovative products are now used in modern dermatology which can also help women and men over 40 to achieve a youthfully firm complexion.
What skin problems can occur?
Skin problems can of course vary greatly from person to person – signs of ageing can have the following symptoms:
Pale skin tone – The skin is only moderately supplied with blood due to an insufficient supply of nutrients. As a result, the skin often appears somewhat sallow and pale, making it look less fresh.
Redness – With increasing age, it is not uncommon for the capillaries of the skin to dilate, resulting in red areas, patches or spots. This can be triggered by an inflammatory disease of the skin, such as rosacea, but other causes are of course also possible.
Wrinkles – The so-called expression lines cause the permanent formation of smaller wrinkles of all kinds on the face, for example crow’s feet and nasolabial folds, as well as frown lines.
Blemishes – Unfortunately, spots and blemishes are not just limited to puberty. Hormonal changes in particular (e.g. the approaching menopause), as well as the increase in male hormones, sometimes increase sebum production, which can lead to more oily skin and promote the formation of pimples.
Dry skin – Excessively dry skin is also a typical symptom of skin over 40, as it is no longer sufficiently moisturized and the production of lipids often decreases. As a result, the outer layers of the skin have a flaky surface structure.
Sagging skin – Over time, the firmness of the connective tissue is also gradually reduced. The reduced production capacity of collagen fibers reduces the skin’s elasticity and its ability to store sufficient amounts of moisture. The result is often sagging skin.
Pigment spots – Increased exposure to the sun leaves its mark over time in the form of small or larger dark spots. The human face in particular is frequently exposed to damaging UV rays.
What factors influence our skin?
Not only does time leave its mark on our skin, but other factors also drive the unstoppable ageing process and impair the body’s general ability to regenerate. This in turn has implications for specific skin care from the age of 40.
Hormones – Hormones play an important role in the optimal functioning of all organs in our body – including our skin. The hormonal balance changes in the course of life. Fewer female hormones, such as oestrogen and progesterone, and more androgens, such as testosterone and DHEA, often cause oily skin and sometimes lead to blemishes.
Smoking – Tobacco smoke is one of the most damaging factors for premature and accelerated skin ageing. This is because the substances contained in tobacco inhibit blood circulation and prevent the formation of new collagen or accelerate its breakdown.
Stress – Physical and mental stress is of course always a health risk. And this naturally also applies to our skin. This is because stress releases so-called free radicals, which then increasingly attack the body’s cells.
Diet – An incorrect or inadequate diet contributes significantly to premature skin ageing, for example if the food is too salty, high in sugar or high in fat. However, alcohol or certain preservatives and additives in our food also have a negative effect on the appearance of the skin. The skin also needs sufficient fluids to maintain an appropriate level of moisture internally.
UV radiation – The sun’s rays are one of the main factors that have a negative impact on our skin. Although the body produces the vital vitamin D due to the sun’s rays, our skin is permanently damaged by UVB radiation in particular.
Over-care – Excessive use of different skincare products without a suitable concept, or without a sensible adaptation to the respective skin type, can sometimes do more harm than good.
Which ingredients are suitable for skin care after 40?
The vast majority of creams, serums and other skincare products developed primarily for skin over 40 rely on very specific ingredients that have an anti-ageing effect and also act as intensive moisturizers.
Hyaluronic acid – Hyaluronic acid is a gel-like mass that has the ability to absorb extreme amounts of water. It fulfills a wide variety of functions in the body, for example as a moisture reservoir and as an important part of the connective tissue that firms the skin from the inside.
Colostrum – The first milk contains highly concentrated and valuable ingredients in a naturally composed form and, as the “elixir of life for the skin”, provides numerous essential building blocks.
Retinol – This vitamin, a variant of vitamin A, helps our skin to arrange the connective tissue fibers and retain moisture. Among other things, this leads to a finer skin texture. Retinol also has a strong antioxidant effect and promotes skin regeneration.
Collagen – This protein is of enormous importance for the formation of collagen fibers, which play a decisive role in the elasticity and resilience of the skin.
Niacinamide – As a derivative of vitamin B3, niacinamide is an anti-ageing active ingredient that stimulates the production of collagen and elastin and reduces wrinkles and pigmentation spots. It also helps to strengthen the skin’s protective barrier.
Vitamins – Some of the various vitamins also have antioxidant properties and therefore have a positive effect on the appearance of our skin, such as vitamins A, C, E or the B vitamins.
Amino acids – These protein building blocks, such as arginine, lysine, histidine or proline, play a central role in the regeneration of cells and therefore also have an effect on our skin.
Skin care after 40 – 5 tips
Tip 1 – Make sure your facial skin is richly nourished. The ingredients mentioned above can of course be beneficial here. However, products with a specifically adapted pH value should be used for the delicate eye area.
Tip 2 – Thorough cleansing and gentle exfoliation care for your skin and improve its appearance.
Tip 3 – You can also support your skin with your lifestyle. You should avoid alcohol, tobacco (smoke) and unhealthy food as much as possible and instead focus on a varied and vitamin-rich diet. It goes without saying that drinking sufficient amounts of water or unsweetened herbal tea is also important.
Tip 4 – Make sure you get a sufficient amount of sleep. Beauty sleep gives your skin the time it needs for healthy regeneration.
Tip 5 – Protect yourself from the sun’s UV rays. Prefer to stay in the shade and use sunscreen with a high protection factor (at least 30)
